Focus
on Developing Countries with Case Studies from India
With growing and more affluent populations,
changes in lifestyles, and economic globalization,
developing countries are facing a daunting challenge
towards sustainability. Besides, there is a risk
that poverty alleviation, if not planned and implemented
properly, might result in further degradation of
the environment and quality of life. In this perspective,
policy makers have realized that if development
has to be sustained, the old strategy of putting
filters to the “wastes” from specific
manufacturing processes is not enough. Corporate
planners have also realized that they have to be
harmony with the local communities, in their areas
of operation. This alone will ensure long-term survival
of their business.More comprehensive strategies
are needed at a systemic level to plan societies
that are sustainable. Industrial Ecology offers
a new platform to develop such strategies. The emerging
field of Industrial Ecology has generated enormous
interest over the last few years in the US, Europe
and Japan. It is fast becoming the new “mantra”
for sustainable development among planners in different
spheres of activity. What is Industrial Ecology?
How can Industrial Ecology be implemented, particularly
in developing countries? This book provides an overview
of the subject and some of the concepts are illustrated
with actual case studies from India. The book, the
first devoted to the relevance of Industrial Ecology
for developing countries, is primarily aimed at
policy makers, local and regional authorities, especially
planners – development planners, planners
in different departments of governments and corporate
planners as well.
